Frequently Asked Questions

  • We parade on Tuesday and Thursday from 19:00 to 21:30 throughout the year. The Squadron only closes for approximately 2 weeks at Christmas.

  • To join as a Cadet if joining us for the first time you must be at least 12 years old and in Year 8 at school, but no older than 17 on joining.

  • Officially there is no minimum commitment for either Cadets or Staff. However, as a voluntary organisation, the truth is that you get out what you put in. We parade 2 nights a week and offer a range of weekend activities, but you can do as many or as few as you wish depending on your goals in the organisation.

  • Cadets on first joining are issued with their ‘blue’ uniform by the RAF (and therefore technically your family and friends’ taxes!). As the kit is issued and Crown property, it must be looked after and returned on leaving. Extra items can be bought through private means at your own expense.

The ‘green’ uniform known as MTP-PCS is not issued, but the Squadron holds a small surplus number of sets to issue where available. If we don’t have your sizes this is something you will need to buy yourself, but can generally be obtained for reasonable prices second-hand.

Socks, shoes, and boots are not issued at any time and need to be purchased at your own expense.

  • It currently costs £12.00 per Cadet per month to be an active member of our Squadron. Families with multiple Cadets in a household pay £12.00 for the first Cadet, and £10.00 for each Cadet thereafter.

All subscription payments are made monthly via Standing Order.

If for whatever reason the cost of membership is a barrier to you joining us, please still get in touch with us as assistance is available.

  • When the Air Training Corps (ATC) was first created in February 1941, Britain was in the midst of the Second World War. As such, the ATC was seen as a positive recruitment mechanism for the Royal Air Force (RAF).

These days the organisation is no longer directly in existence to recruit for the RAF, and so there is no obligation to join the RAF, or any of the Armed Forces, on leaving.

Many ex-Cadets do go on to join the UK Armed Forces, including many senior RAF figures who sometimes even return to discuss their careers with us. However, many other ex-Cadets have gone on to forge successful careers in Medicine, the Civil Service, Academia, the Airlines and a whole lot more besides!
